Carlos Pestana, MD, PhD (Author)
Carlos Pestana, MD, PhD, is an Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. A native of the Canary Islands, Spain, Dr. Pestana grew up in Mexico City, and got his MD Degree from The National University of Mexico. After five years of residency training at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and earning a Ph.D. in Surgery from the University of Minnesota, Dr.Pestana joined the faculty of the newly created University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Over the next thirty years, Dr. Pestana was a full time faculty member at the Surgery Department, and a part time Dean in charge of Academic Affairs, and he devoted most of his time and energy to the teaching of medical students.
During those years, he was recognized by the students as an outstanding faculty member in more than 35 occasions, and he received teaching awards at the institutional, state, and national levels, including the Presidential teaching award, the Piper Foundation Piper Professor award, the National Golden Apple Award from the American Medical Student association, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Professor Award. At the time of his retirement, in 1998, the Alumni of the medical school established the Carlos Pestana Scholarship for medical students, and gave his name to the lecture hall where he had done most of his teaching.
